Batsaikhan Oronir

Somewhere along the way, I lost a step. I got sloppy. Dulled my own edge. Maybe I went and did the worst crime of all ... I got civilized.

"Sai"

֎ High Rule Warrior - Member of the most esteemed brothers of the Oronir. They are the first line of defense against attack and also the most deadly of the Oroniri.

֎ Shinobi - Trained by a Doman Shinobi who was saved by a fellow Oroniri following the fall of Doma and brought to the ancestral lands of the Oronir to recover. He was chosen as a child to train for his ability to detect aetherial essences.

֎ Latent Echo - Has the undesired ability to see a memory of someone who is about to die. He calls it 'The Shine"

֎ Family - Sai is the youngest brother of Devet Berdi Oronir, a high ranking warrior and among the most respected among the Oronirii, who fell in battle against the Adarkim while protecting their ancestral lands from assault. Youngest of five brothers, two who were lost in the defense and preservation of the Oroniri way.

Personality

֎ Merciless, pragmatic, and incredibly violent - Sai has spent most of his life his skills of assassination garnered him the label the ”Blackned Warrior" While it’s true that he exhibits little in the way of emotion, and has no remorse for the people he’s killed, he does not kill for fun and pleasure. A better characterization of Sai would be a survivor – someone who will always do whatever it takes to keep on living, no matter how brutal and horrible. The fact is, if Sai was any less ruthless, someone would have killed him a long time ago.

֎ Kill or be killed - Sai's incredible aptitude for violence attracts attention, envy, and revulsion, and creates a self-perpetuating cycle of carnage. His reputation is significant enough that he is forced into conflict no matter where he goes. In a world that constantly reinforces the Darwinian lesson of “survival of the fittest,” Sai believes he delivers the weak to Azim for judgment.

֎ Justice - has many deeply-held personal beliefs. Justice-oriented, he is observant, conscientious, and judgmental. The Oraniri way to him is a means to an end. “Such is the way of things”.

Background

There were few sights Magnai held more sacred than dawn above Azim Khaat. That this dawn came after his first victory in the Nadham added additional savor. Leadership again rested with the Oronir on the Dawn Throne, though it was distressful to know it was because of who had fallen while they gained the throne. The room was filled with somber celebration, as all eyes turned to the door.

Batsaikhan entered the throne room, both ancient, ominous, and deteriorating. On the day of the Nadham he had stood shoulder to shoulder with his brother Hobogetur and Tokhtamysh as Magnai claimed their prize. The eldest brother, Devet Berdi had fallen in battle protecting the ancestral lands of the Oranir from the Adarkim only four moons prior. There was no doubt that the Adarkim, as brutal as they are, wanted to thin the Oronirii competition for the Naddam.

The brothers were all capable of sensing aether, their abilities were varied but they all possessed traits that enhanced their innate abilities. Hobogetur, who could sense the magical incantations before a spell was completely formed served as ovoo protector. As he dropped to one knee, mortally wounded from holding back a Dotharl assault that penetrated his aetheric shield, he clenched his bloody teeth and growled. “Hold this ground, or die with me”

Being aetherically sensitive, Batsaikhan could see his brother's life force leaving his body. The damage was too severe, he should have been dead on impact, but it was as if the sound of the ovoo being claimed was keeping him alive through sheer will. He deflected incoming strike after incoming strike while Magnai placed his hands on sacred ground.

As Magnai claimed the ovoo Hobogetur fell silent. As Magnai claimed the ovoo, five brothers became three. As Magnai claimed the ovoo the four Dotharl responsible for his death followed him into the hands of Azim at the end of Sai’s blades. He could see their last memories as they fell, he shielded himself from what he could. Years of meditation with the Qestir shamans taught him to control his gift. He would experience the memories of the dead through the Echo, but he could also suppress them and set them aside so they would not deter his movements, and there was no time to mourn.

Hobogetur took his last breath as Sai took in his last memory as he placed his hand on his head and said an Oroniri prayer to Azim. He could see a familiar woman dressed in indigo leather and chain armor that made no sound, her gaze was serene and soft yet concentrated. She carefully controlled her motions and made no unnecessary movements, all of her energy went into brutal grace that all his warrior expertise could not answer. Even after months of recovery she still wove her magics and daggers with supreme skill and all he could ever touch was her shadow.

Sai remembered her, her swept-back horns and scales shimmered like the ebony satin he’d seen on the noble ladies in Doma and Kugane. They shimmered like a black sun on a summer day. She had won her match against his brother, of course, she won, and she was gracious in her victory bowing politely to her opponent and keeping any personal triumph muted. She was breathtaking, she was perfect. As his brother looked up from the dust he heard her say “I am Shina Natsume, Shinobi, I am honored bound to teach one of you, and you will all be better for it.”

Looking out across the grasslands he set aside the dying last sweet memory of someone his brother loved. Now there were duties to be seen too as the Nadaam ended. Claiming the ovoo always gave the victor a sense of the devastation around them, and as Magnai hand glowed gold like the sun but in his chest, his heart stuttered, gracious and respectful his words came. “May father Azim smile on them all. We have won.”

Magnai, the Sun, smiled at Sai as the door closed on the chamber of Azim in the Down Throne. His dark, aetherial sensitive, eyes met Magnai without flinching. He held his gaze and it seemed his stature grew to meet that of the Sun’s. Oranir stood tall among Oranir, words did not have to be spoken because all in the room knew the sacrifice the brothers had given in the last few months alone so that Magnai could sit where he is now, and Sai, Batsaikhan, the strong, did not blink before the Sun, and he was not dismissed. They both gave no quarter and none was expected. No one knew how long they both held each other’s gaze captive but finally, Sai spoke and his voice was infinitely calm and collected as it echoed in the hall. “Kahgan, you will pay what is owed.”

Magnai growled under his breath, “Tomorrow, today we celebrate!”

The Oronir

֎ All members of the Oronir tribe believe themselves to be direct descendants of Azim, the tribe's god of the sun. The strongest tribe in the region, the Oronir currently occupies the Dawn Throne and their ancestral home near the Onsal Hakair mountains.

֎ The ancestral lands of Oranir are among the foothills of the Onsal Hakair mountain range where they are lead by their tribal Khan. In the mountains Sai was no stranger to combat, this was his tribe's central tenant, the Oronir, the descendants of Azim, were meant to rule, and by force, if needs be.

֎ They would achieve victory in the Nadaam for several years. Lead to victory by what the other Oronir would come to call the Sun himself, Magnai Oronir. However with all victories, there is a cost, and that price was always paid in blood.

The Azim Steppe

֎ A vast expanse of grassland that stretches across the far reaches of northern Othard, the Azim Steppe is said to be the ancestral home of the Au Ra, and remains to this day the home of the nomadic Xaela clan. Devout worshipers of the Dawn Father and the Dusk Mother─Azim and Nhaama─the Xaela are known for their unique set of beliefs.

֎ The Sea of Blades - Grasslands area to the east.

֎ Onsal Hakair - Mountainous area to the north.

֎ The Towering Still - Mountainous area to the west also supports a network of caves.

֎ Azim Khaat (the dawn throne) - The center area, containing giant stone structures that look like fingers, and a bowl structure that overlooks the Azim Steppe.

֎ Nhaama's Retreat - Grasslands leading to the Nhaama Desert.
